Breeders Cup News Ramonti has Breeders Cup Mile option |
|
GODOLPHIN's Ramonti, who won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday (September 29) under a clever ride from Frankie Dettori, may be bound for the Breeders Cup Mile. Ramonti has now won three Group 1 races this season in the UK. This time Dettori stole the race, knowing that his chief rival, Excellent Art, must come late. The Italian struck for home very early and Excellent Art, predictably anchored in last place at the time, had a mountain to climb from there on. Excellent Art was closing fast at the line but, even for a hold-up horse, the Aidan O'Brien trained runner was given far too much to do by jockey Jamie Spencer yet again. The Coolmore team have sacked Spencer once in the past and they ought to consider doing the same again. Despite being Champion Jockey, Jamie Spencer's judgment of pace and distance has always appeared suspect. He rides every race identically, giving his rivals a head start and his mounts a mountain to climb in the final furlong. It is incredulous that Spencer can get the number one ride on any Coolmore horse ahead of the superlative Mick Kinane, who was on the team's second string Duke of Marmalade. Sheikh Mohammed, the power behind the Godolphin operation and the most influential member of the ruling family of Dubai, may yet route Ramonti to Monmouth Park. The Arab's racing manager, old-Etonian Simon Crisford covered every angle when he said: "We are not ruling a trip to Breeders Cup out. No decision has been made." Once he removes the splinters from his backside, Simon Crisford might consider a career in politics.
